As someone who is working on her first romance novel, I’m always looking for ways to improve my craft. This is why I was so excited to find the YouTube channel of The Writing Gals.

They are 4 successful sweet romance writers who share their experiences as self-published authors. They answer audience questions and give tons of tips and tricks that they’ve learned throughout their careers.

In this video, they talk about the subject of writing a kissing scene and how it is something that really takes a lot of practice before a writer can become proficient at it. They gave the advice to watch a kissing scene from one of your favorite TV shows or movies and write what you see as if you were writing a scene from a novel.

Does he touch her face? Does she run her fingers through his hair? What do you think the characters are feeling? How do they look at each other right after the kiss is over?

One of the biggest issues that I struggle with as a writer is perfectionism. I want everything I write to be great. But it’s often not, so I procrastinate and end up not writing at all.

Using this tip for writing a kiss scene isn’t for anyone else to see. It’s just for you to use to practice getting good at writing all the juicy elements that create a great kiss scene. Knowing that it’s for my eyes only really takes the pressure off.

Here are some first kiss scenes I’m going to practice writing:

  • The Office: Jim and Pam
  • New Girl: Nick and Jess
  • Gilmore Girls: Luke and Lorelai
  • X-Files: Mulder and Scully

Final Thoughts

These are a few of the kiss scenes that came to my mind first when I thought about my favorites. With practice, I hope to be able to give my original story characters the level of tension and chemistry that these characters have. What about you? Do you remember any of the kiss scenes that took your breath away?
