Is Substack Helpful for Fiction Authors?

An email list is the most important marketing tool for a self-published author. Previously, I used an email list platform that was too complicated and charged money after reaching a certain number of subscribers.

As an author, I want to spend as much of my free time as possible honing my craft and writing books, so the simpler the tool, the better.

I’ve been hearing about Substack for a while and decided to check it out to see if it could replace my current convoluted email newsletter system.

I love it so far!

It’s simple, straightforward, and has all the features I need to build a fanbase for my books. Here are a few things I love about Substack:

  1. Automatic Welcome Emails: Substack allows you to send an automatic welcome email to new subscribers. This welcome email helps readers get to know you and introduces them to the work you currently have available.
  2. Reader Magnets: You can distribute a reader magnet with your newsletter. A reader magnet is something free that you create, like a short story or an epilogue, that the reader receives once they sign up for your newsletter. You can put links to your reader magnet at the end of your…
