Mary Kubica is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her latest book, Every Last Lie, captivated me from the very first page. The story begins with Clara, who expects her husband Nick and their four-year-old daughter Maisie to come home from ballet practice with dinner. Instead, she is met by a police officer bearing the devastating news that her family has been in a car accident.

Maisie has survived, but tragically, Nick has not. The officer informs Clara that Nick was driving too fast and hit a tree, causing the accident.

Clara is understandably devastated, but when Maisie starts mentioning a “bad man in a black car” who was after them that night, Clara begins to suspect that Nick’s death might not have been an accident. The police dismiss her concerns, prompting Clara to launch her own investigation into what really happened that night.

The narrative alternates between Nick and Clara’s points of view, allowing readers to get to know Nick and uncover the many secrets he was hiding. And he was hiding a whole lot of them! So much in fact that at one point, I even questioned whether Nick had faked his own death to get out of all the trouble he was in.

The story is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. Although I found the ending somewhat disappointing, the journey to get there was engaging and kept me thoroughly interested. I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good suspenseful read.
